A joint is the movable connection between two bones enclosed by a joint capsule. This unit is stabilized by ligaments and tendons.

The joint surfaces are covered by hyaline cartilage, which forms the so-called osteochondral unit with the underlying bone.

The joint cartilage is a complex network which is divided into different zones. This structure allows an almost friction-free movement between the joint partners.

If a cartilage defect exists, the cause must first be found in order to be able to carry out an adequate treatment.

The transplantation of cartilage is currently medically possible in the hip joint and knee joint.

Currently, the Cartilage Center of Northern Germany offers cartilage treatment in the upper ankle joint as well as cartilage transplantation in the knee joint. In the case of possible cartilage transplantations in the hip, the Cartilage Center also offers experienced colleagues the opportunity to do so. The team will be expanded in 2019 to cover the entire spectrum of cartilage treatment and transplantation.

Since the Cartilage Center of Northern Germany is located in the rooms of the Chirurgisch-Orthopädischen Versorgungs-Zentrum (COVZ) in Quickborn near Hamburg, you are in the right place with us for any form of orthopaedic treatment.

For knee pain or a knee injury, we use the entire modern treatment spectrum. This includes:

Conservative procedures such as

  • Manual and physiotherapy
  • drug therapy
  • the use of orthopaedic products
  • neural therapy
  • acupuncture

Arthroscopic procedures / knee surgery in the case of

  • Meniscus damage
  • Cruciate ligament injuries / cruciate ligament rupture
  • Collateral ligaments injuries  / ligament rupture
  • Knee-cap diseases
  • Osteochondrosis dissecans (detachment of a piece of bone cartilage and its rejection into the joint)
  • Cartilage damage and arthrosis
  • Synovitis
  • Axis misalignments (O or X leg)
  • Free joint bodies

So knee pain can have many causes and sudden, persistent or recurring knee pain is a sure sign that something is wrong.

Pain while walking, during or after running (runner’s knee), after sport, climbing stairs or kneeling, but also knee pain at rest, stabbing pain in the knee and a swollen knee are common symptoms that make a more detailed examination useful.

Our aim in the treatment of knee problems and knee pain is always to apply the best possible procedures

An operation is always the last choice and a cartilage treatment is only one of many possibilities.

However, cartilage regeneration or transplantation can prevent or significantly delay the use of an (individual) knee implasnt!

First of all, professional diagnostics must be carried out so that the correct treatment can be initiated.

At the first appointment we therefore carry out a side-by-side physical examination and various movement tests. If necessary, x-rays and ultrasound will support the first suspicious diagnosis.

In most cases, a magnetic resonance tomography (MRT, magnetic resonance imaging) is also performed in a radiological practice because of the informative value.

If joint inflammation is suspected, laboratory analyses of blood, synovial fluid or a tissue sample (biopsy) are indicated.

If a reliable diagnosis is not yet available after these examinations, arthroscopy (arthroscopy) can bring clarity.

Once the diagnosis has been made, we take the time to explain it to our patients and to discuss the intended treatment.
